Celebrate Chinese New Year in Niagara

Additional New Year celebrations are in store for the Niagara Region with the coming of the Chinese New Year on February 16. In Niagara, the celebrations this year are even more important as 2018 has been designated as the Canada-China Year of Tourism.

The Chinese New Year is the most important celebration in China. It is celebrated in the country for around two weeks with families coming together for dinner. There are colourful lanterns and decorations, ringing of the bells, traditional lion dances and lighting of firecrackers. This festival is also known as the Lunar New Year, and the Chinese calendar also incorporates the Chinese Zodiac with 12 signs, each represented by an animal. 2018 is the Year of the Dog according to the calendar. To give locals and tourists a taste of these wonderful celebrations, there are a few events taking place across Niagara for the Chinese New Year.

In the city of Niagara Falls, the spectacular waterfalls are always an integral part of any celebration. While illumination of the falls happens regularly along with fireworks, on special occasions, the waterfalls are illuminated in certain colours. On Thursday, February 15th, the Falls will be illuminated red between 7pm – 11pm.

Get ready to welcome the Chinese New Year in Niagara this year. Don’t miss out on all the fun!

Each wine region in the world has a uniqueness and this is on account of the soil and the climate of the area. If we take a case of Niagara Region wine and a case of the Napa Valley Region, there are a few similarities in wine production but some differences as well. As a result, each Region’s range of wines has something different to offer to the consumer.

History and Number of Wineries

Napa is one of the leading wine regions in the world and a popular destination on the wine route. It currently has more than 450 wineries. Wine growing in Napa goes back to the 1850s and 60s. In only a few decades, many more wineries have sprung up. Today, Napa Valley is not only one of the premier wine producing Regions in the US, it also has a major global standing.

In comparison, the Niagara Region has a more recent history of licensed wine production, although grapes were grown as far back as the early 1800s. Currently, the Niagara region has over 100 wineries with several producing high quality VQA wines. The Niagara Peninsula has 2 regional appellations–Niagara Escarpment and Niagara-on-the-Lake. Sub-appellations include Twenty Mile Bench, Beamsville Bench, St. David’s Bench and others.

Where Does Niagara Score Over Napa?

Cool climate wines

Napa has produced a range of amazing wines, especially Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Merlot. The climate in Napa is warm throughout the year, which is good for producing warm-climate wines. Grapes ripen quickly, are sweeter and have a strong fruity flavour. Since it is a warm region, it cannot produce cool climate wines that have higher natural acidity and balanced flavours.

In contrast, one of the major reasons that the Niagara Region is making its presence felt is due to the unique environmental conditions of this Region. It is ideal for cool climate winemaking as a result of its warm summers and cool winters. Avoided, are extreme temperatures, due to the presence of the Great Lakes situated in the area.

The Niagara Escarpment, that is a limestone ridge, contributes to the terroir of the Region. Warm days & cool nights result in wines that are perfectly balanced, since the grapes are a great blend of ripeness and acidity. While several grape varietals are cultivated in the Region, Chardonnay & Riesling for white wines, and Pinot Noir & Cabernet Franc for red wines are especially suited to the cooler climes of Niagara. Cabernet Sauvignon, Vidal, Gamay Noir and other varieties that are popular in the Region.

Icewines

Napa has a vast range of red & white wines but if you wish to savour fantastic icewines, you will have to do so in the Niagara Region. The warm climate of Napa does not allow the production of icewines. Cold temperatures such as that of Niagara during winter are essential to make icewines. Today, Canada is one of the largest producers of icewine in the world, and the Niagara Region and other areas in Ontario are key contributors.

To produce icewines, grapes ripened over summer are left on the vine to freeze during winter at temperatures of -8°C or lower. This results in a concentrated juice in the grapes that are then picked and crushed to produce flavoursome icewines. Sweetness is balanced with acidity resulting in intense flavours. The Niagara Region wineries have perfected the art of making the best icewines since the time it was first produced here in 1984.

Vidal Blanc grapes are most commonly used to produce the best quality icewines. Other varietals are also used including:
  • Riesling
  • Cabernet Franc
  • Gewürztraminer
Besides an excellent range of red & white wines, the Niagara Region has a unique product in its icewines.

Awards and Accolades

In Niagara, there are many wineries producing a range of wonderful wines. Quality of these wines has been validated by numerous awards both Canadian and Internationally. The Region’s icewines especially, have garnered many awards for its outstanding quality.
In the last decade, the some of the wineries of the Niagara Region’s that have won international awards for their icewines include:
  • Inniskillin
  • Jackson-Triggs
  • Pillitteri Estates

Southbrook also uses organic methods to grow grapes in its vineyards. It is an all-natural process from the vineyard to the bottle. No chemicals are used during farming and production of the wine. Biodynamics is practised in all aspects, from the soil to the ecosystem. Besides this, solar panels at the vineyard provide electricity, a major step towards the conservation of energy.

These methods provide a natural and healthy environment resulting in strong vines and vibrant wines.

He recognized the potential of Niagara’s wine country and blended classic techniques with modern technology to produce wines.

Tawse Winery uses organic and biodynamic methods to make wines, and received its certification in 2008. The winery has a six-level, gravity-flow design and utilizes geothermal systems for renewable energy. Sunset Beach, St Catharines

With a 1,200 ft stretch of sandy beach and gorgeous sunset views, Sunset Beach in St Catharines, is another wonderful Niagara beach. The waters of Lake Ontario wash ashore on the beach that was known as the Municipal Beach.
Not too many people know about this beach so if you like less crowded beaches, this is the place to go. Of course, summer does see a spike in visitors but it is still a hidden gem. Since the beach is peaceful, it is a good place to relax, sit on one of the benches to admire the views or go cycling.
It is a delightful place for families with children, as there is a playground facility to keep the little ones busy. Couples too will find this serene beach a perfect spot to take a walk. If you enjoy boating, the beach offers a free boat launch for small crafts during the season. You can also go on to explore the Waterfront Trail from the beach.
As sunset approaches, the water glimmers with the rays of the setting sun and the sky looks like a dramatic painting with various hues and patterns. You can enjoy the sunset view from the beaches, the benches or while boating on the lake.

Get The Kids Out

The most fun a family can have in 48 hours

From glow-in-the-dark golfing with wizards to getting good and wet behind the Falls, we’ve packed every kind of amazing into this sample two-day family itinerary.

DAY 1

START WITH A BLAST

You may not need your cup of coffee this morning, because there’s nothing sleepy about the world-famous Street of Fun by the Falls at Clifton Hill. It’s Niagara Falls’ top destination for attractions, restaurants, entertainment and more. Start by getting your bearings atop the 175-foot Niagara Skywheel, then bring your cameras to the Ripley’s Museum where your kids can get up close and personal with over 100 life-like wax figures, an art motion simulator ride and the almost unbelievable Odditorium. Or engage in some family-friendly competition in the 70,000 square feet of crowd-pleasing fun that makes up the one and only Great Canadian Midway.

EVEN LUNCH IS FUN

When you’ve worked up an appetite, there’s plenty of family-friendly options, including the Rainforest Caféwhere meals are shared with lively, animatronic animals in a wild jungle setting. Just save room for dessert at Hershey’s Chocolate World where chocolate lovers can spend some quality time with their one true love. There’s nothing vanilla about it.

THE FALLS UP CLOSE

Next, rattle your bones with a thunderous journey deep below and behind the heart of Niagara with Journey Behind the Falls. Kids will love putting on the rain ponchos provided and experiencing the power and the mist of the mighty Horseshoe Falls, crashing down from 13 storeys above.

MAGIC, MUSIC, AND DINNER

Kids love a buffet dinner, but a buffet dinner with entertainment is even better. Head to the Greg Frewin Theatre for a Vegas-style spectacle, as one of the world’s premier magicians, Greg Frewin, performs his family-friendly illusions. Check the calendar before your visit, because concerts and comedy are also on the menu.

A RAINBOW BEFORE BED

On your way to or from the theatre, enjoy a different kind of magical experience. Witness the Falls as they’re lit up in the colours of the rainbow, beginning every evening at dusk.

WATER, WATER EVERYWHERE

For families staying at Americana Waterpark Resort, Skyline Hotel & Waterpark or Great Wolf Lodge, you may want to skip the evening show and get to these activity-packed hotels early. With some of the best indoor water parks in the country, plus restaurants, games, live-action adventures and more, your kids will be entertained from the moment you check in. And if you’re the type of family who really makes waves in the water, consider booking an extra night. The rest of Niagara will just have to wait.

DAY 2

FUNICULAR FUN

After a great breakfast, head back to the Falls for another look, this time from the Falls Incline Railway. This cable-style car (sans cables) will delight the young ones of your crew with a ride down to the “Bridge of Flowers” pedestrian crossing over the Niagara Parkway into Table Rock Welcome Centre, where you can grab a quick lunch, or pick up some souvenirs.

PLAY THE GREAT ESCAPE

Who knew locking yourself in a room with your family could be so much fun?

Enjoy an early afternoon of mystery at The Adventure Room. This 60-minute, live escape game gets the family working together using logic and clues to break out…before the clock runs out! Ages 8 and up will get a thrill from the challenge, and teens will discover their family is smarter than they thought. Just be sure to book a time on the online calendar before arriving.

A WALK IN THE WOODS

Now that you’ve escaped the Adventure Room, it’s time for a different kind of escape. The Niagara Glen is just the place to spark your kids’ inner awe of nature, with 4 km of hiking trails winding through a pristine pocket of Carolinian Forest. This designated nature reserve will have them exploring thousands-year-old boulders on some rugged terrain, so be sure to wear suitable footwear. Or, for cycle-loving families, bikes are available for rent seasonally.

BUTTERFLY LOVE

About a kilometre from the Northeast corner of the Niagara Glen (about a 13-minute drive from the Falls) you’ll find another natural paradise…although this one is tropical. The Butterfly Conservatory, situated on the grounds of the beautiful Botanical Gardens, is home to more than 2000 butterflies, gliding freely through lush, exotic greenery. Kids of all ages will be entranced at the up-close sight of these colourful creatures, 45 species in total, feeding, fluttering, and sipping nectar. You can fuel up for the trip home at the Butterfly Café, and discuss which colourful friend is the one you’ll miss the most.

It’s never easy to please both kids and adults, especially on a trip, but Niagara manages to bring about a happy balance of approvals.

Time To Breathe

A HEALING MORNING

Begin your day in a hidden oasis of serenity. The Healing Salt Cave is a man-made recreation of a salt mine microclimate, originally found in Wieliczka, Poland. Treatments include halotherapy, an alternative form of healing involving, among other things, exposure to cool/humid salt air. Relaxation opportunities also include therapeutic massage, saltwater foot spas, infrared saunas, reiki, and the simple joy of lying beside the handcrafted salt lamps and letting your stresses melt away.

DAY 1

Time to Breathe Day 1

TOP-RATED RELAXATION

At over 13,000 square feet, the 100 Fountain Spa in Niagara-on-the-Lake is a can’t-miss opportunity to take R&R to a whole other level. Named the #1 spa in Canada by Spas of America in 2013, it’s easy to feel the stress start to melt away the moment you walk through the door.

Sink into the warmth of the fireside lounge as you review the enviable treatment menu.

That’s not all. A Vichy shower, outdoor hot springs, indoor saltwater pool, fitness centre and even the most delightfully fresh organic treats make every visit absolutely worth it.

DINE ABOVE IT ALL

A day of relaxation deserves to be followed by a tranquil evening out. The Skylon Tower Revolving Dining Room allows you to unwind…not just away from it all, but 775 feet above it all, too. Enjoy award-winning continental cuisine while slowly and silently rotating 360 degrees over a one-hour period – for a gorgeous, ever-changing panoramic view of Niagara Falls.

A PEACEFUL SLEEP

There are so many ways to have a restful overnight stay in Niagara. Why not end your evening somewhere that’s pamper-perfect, like the serene and luxurious setting at one of our boutique inns or hotels? You deserve the romance jacuzzis-for-two, soul-soothing in-room spa treatments, and fireplaces that take cozy to the next level. Not to mention waking up atop a plush, king-size mattress to the best-ever-breakfast-in-bed. The only thing more luxurious than your terrycloth bathrobe is the gracious and personalized hospitality of a smaller hotel. The only problem? You may never want to leave the Pillar and Post, Sterling Inn and Spa, White Oaks Resort & Spa, The Charles Hotel or 124 Queen Hotel & Spa.

DAY 2

Time to Breathe Day 2

A SOAK IN THE SUN

After waking up refreshed from your day of tranquility, you’ll have plenty of energy… to keep on relaxing. Less than a half hour’s drive away, Lakeside Park calls, with its 1500 feet of sandy beach perfect for stretching out on a beach chair with a good book. You can even get in touch with your inner kid with a ride on the park’s 111-year-old, carved wooden carousel, that’s still only 5 cents a ride.

LUNCH IN A VINEYARD

Once your toes are out of the sand, hop back in the car and take a short cruise through wine country to Henry of Pelham Family Estate Winery. This cozy, family-run winery is full of history, and offers a full wine experience including tours, tastings and open-air casual dining. Take a seat on the patio of The Coach House Café and indulge in fresh, locally-inspired cuisine while taking in the beauty of the surrounding vineyards.  History buffs might also like Vineland Estates, the building of the winery dates back to the 1840s and offers picturesque views and award-winning wines you can enjoy in the century barn, and dine in the former farmhouse – now an excellent restaurant with panoramic views of the vineyards. The locally-inspired 80-seat restaurant at Redstone Winery is another wonderful midday option. Get a table by one of its many floor-to-ceiling glass windows and enjoy a bold glass of wine and a fresh, locally inspired meal.

There’s much to reflect on at the end of this 48 hours, from the breath-taking views to your surely-renewed appreciation for nature, serenity and time away from it all.

Perfect Weekends: Twenty Valley

Wine lovers know it’s not all about Niagara-on-the-Lake when it comes to exploring Wine Country. With 48 critically acclaimed wineries and a signature off-beat vibe, Niagara’s Twenty Valley offers up a unique experience with every visit.

Winter in the Valley means marshmallow roasts and barrel rolling. It means fireside Icewine sessions and slow falling snow. It’s slow-stewed meats and super crispy cheese along the edges of hearty soups.

Winter WineFest is a great time to visit. It brings together the area’s best food and wine, outdoors on the streets of pretty little Jordan Village. Cozy fire pits help you keep toasty, as does the wine.

So, with that in mind — here’s what our perfect winter weekend in The Valley looks like:

1. Spoil yourself a little and stay at The Inn on The Twenty. Not only is it in the heart of Jordan Village, but most rooms have a fireplace to warm your cold toes after exploring.

2. While in Jordan Village, make sure to stop in at Cave Spring Winery. Their 2014 Riesling Icewine has notes of raisins, poached pear, comb honey and candied orange zest. It’s definitely worth a try!

3. For the areas best vineyard view, head over to Flat Rock Cellars. On weekends in January, roast special sparkling wine marshmallows around their fire-pit and toast the winter season!

4. Between winery visits, make sure to stop in at 13th Street Bakery for a half dozen of what our Community Manager thinks is Ontario’s best butter tart. As a former judge of the Buttertart Bake-Off, she would know.

5. For dinner, head out to The Restaurant at Vineland Estates. As one of Niagara’s first winery restaurants, they know how to make your meal feel right. Enjoy dinner fireside in the 1845 farmhouse. We highly recommend the 3 or 5 course Chef’s Creative Menu.

6. In the morning, enjoy breakfast at The Inn before hitting the road. Make sure to stop into Upper Canada Cheese on your way out for some Maple Smoked Comfort Cream — a great pairing for locally-made Icewine!

Perfect Weekends: Beamsville Bench

Without a doubt, you know they grow grapes down in Niagara…but did you know there are eleven unique micro-appellations in the area? The Niagara Peninsula has the largest planted area of all viticultural areas in Canada — the region boasts over 32 thriving varietals across 13,600 acres.

We’re currently in love with the Beamsville Bench. The area’s continuous air circulation and moderate temperature results in consistent growing conditions…and some happy winemakers to boot! Cool-climate classics like Riesling, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir flourish here, and the area is home to some of Niagara’s newest wineries and oldest wines. A happy mix for wine lovers.

It’s not all just wine on the Bench, though. Eclectic chefs and unique artisans gravitate toward the area, bringing with them a fresh take on life (and all things edible!).

So, without further ado — our perfect weekend on the Beamsville Bench:

1. Start your adventure off right with a glass of bubbly at Fielding Estate Winery. The Wine Lodge is open seven days a week, year round…and in warmer months you can enjoy a glass on their sprawling lake-view deck.

2. FeastON at Peninsula Ridge Estates Winery. Full stop. The food is elegant, refined, and oozing local flavours. Plan ahead and book for Sunday brunch!

3. Put down the wine glass and bust out your helm. A trip to Beamsville would not be complete without a sip or two of mead at Rosewood Estate Winery & Meadery. Sample estate honey & stroll along the hives before tucking into one of the many varieties of mead in the tasting room.

4. Stop in at The Beamsville Bakery and Patisserie for fresh doughnuts (or other pastries…but definitely try the doughnuts!). Open since 1958, this little shop is run by a Dutch father-son duo.

5. Dip into a serious sipper or two at Dillon’s Small Batch Distillers. They’re making vodka, gin, and white rye from cast-off Niagara grapes.

Need to spend the night?

There are plenty of B&Bs in the area offering a place to rest your head amongst the vines. The House by the Side of the Road offers up stunning views of Tawse Winery and is a short walk across the road to Malivoire.

The Ultimate Romantic Getaway

Can you feel the love tonight?

From a stroll through the vineyards (with a tasting, of course) to watching the lights from the city skyline reflect off the bouncing water, we’ve packed this sample two-day itinerary with events and activities that are sure to make you fall in love all over again.

DAY 1

A VINE ROMANCE

The Niagara Escarpment is home to some of the world’s most unique soil. As a result it’s perfect for wine making. Start your day relaxing and being guided through Niagara’s coveted wine country, stopping along the way at wineries like Peller Estates to sample some of the award-winning wines. Stroll past the growing vines at other vineyards in the region like Trius Winery at Hillebrand and Stratus.

WHO KNEW LUNCH COULD BE ROMANTIC?

All that relaxing can make you hungry. Good thing some of the wineries in the region also have restaurants attached where award-wining chefs serve up a menu of locally grown ingredients that pair perfectly with the wines they make. Stop into Kitchen 76, in the Two Sisters winery. The only thing that will stop you from staring into your loved one’s eyes are the incredible Italian-inspired dishes and view of the attached vineyard.

OLD TOWN, NEW LOVE

Next, head into the historic town of Niagara-on-the-Lake. Few places have the romantic backdrop of this picturesque place. With a history dating back to the 1700’s, you’ll want to explore every corner that feels like a fairy tale. Stroll down main street with a guide as you learn about the historic moments and people that have called this place home. Or take a tour of the stately mansions and elegant homes in the area.

A FLAIR FOR THE DRAMATICS

Niagara is home to a world-renowned theatre festival, celebrating the works and art of George Bernard Shaw. People flock from every corner of the globe to take in a performance here. Treat your special someone to a night of riveting entertainment that is sure to leave you talking into the wee hours of the morning.

Keep in mind, Shaw Festival is very popular, so you often need to book your tickets in advance.

A PLACE TO LAY YOUR HEAD

After a long, memorable day you’ll want a place to unwind. Choose from one of Niagara-on-the-Lake’s magical B&B’s or quaint and historical inns. From 200-year-old historic homes to modern palaces, there’s something for every taste. Speaking of taste – many of the B&B’s have in-house chefs who whip up gourmet meals in the morning. What’s more romantic than waking up next to your special someone with the smell of fresh coffee in the air?

DAY 2

STOP AND SMELL THE ROSES

Start your second day in Niagara off with a walk through the beautiful botanical gardens. This pristine garden, built in 1936, houses exotic flowers with scents and colours that make for a perfectly amorous morning. The pièce de résistance is the world-famous rose garden with over 2,400 roses. Consider the mood set for the rest of the day.

THE PERFECT SOUNDTRACK

If you’re visiting in the summer then a must do is the TD Niagara Jazz festival. What better way to spend the day than sitting on a patio, under the summer sun, sipping local wines and sampling craft beers to a soundtrack of soothing jazz. Enjoy incredible performances all day as you watch the sun dip into the backdrop.

A GOOD MEAL IS THE WAY TO THE HEART

As your romantic getaway comes to a close, treat yourself to the meal of a lifetime. Treadwell Farm to Table Cuisine is an incredible restaurant that blurs the lines between food and art. Impress your partner with a meal that would make even the most hardcore foodie jealous. It goes without saying that Treadwell’s wine list is one to blush over.

THE SPARKLE IN THEIR EYE

As the sun sets you need a way to end your trip on a high note. Picture this: You sit on a patio under the stars sipping the finest local wine as a catamaran pulls up. You board the boat and it carries you past the Falls. The reflection from the city skyline illuminates your special someone’s face and a rainbow of colours reflect in their eyes as the Falls are illuminated with dazzling colours. What you do then is up to you.

Show that special person in your life how much you care with a visit to one of the most romantic places in the world: Niagara.

Brimming With Culture

SOAK IN THE REGION From historic battlegrounds with the smell of gun powder still in the air to riveting performers centre stage, we’ve packed this sample two-day itinerary full of interesting things to see and do.

DAY 1

EXPLORE THE WINERIES ON TWO WHEELS As the wind rushes through your hair, you’ll feel as awake as ever on a bike tour with Zoom Leisure. Experience Niagara by pedalling to different vineyards where you’ll learn about the art of wine making and of course, sample some along the way. As you explore various wine cellars you’ll be treated to local cheese and delicacies to keep you energized for the day ahead.

WHAT’S YOUR FLAVOUR?

Niagara boasts some of the most exquisite restaurants in the country, serving up dishes with fresh, local ingredients. How are you going to try them all? We can help with that. With Taste The Town  you’ll spend 2 and a half hours eating your way through downtown Niagara-on-the-Lake sampling the local delights while you marvel over the local architecture and history.

ARE YOU AFRAID OF THE DARK?

History hasn’t fully moved on in this quaint little town with a white-knuckle past. Spend your evening exploring the most haunted place in Canada with a guided ghost tour. You’ll explore landmarks like the Prince of Wales Hotel, the Courthouse and the Royal George Theatre. Keep your camera ready because you never know what (or who) you might see.

A SLEEP YOU WON’T SOON FORGET

Niagara has an impressive array of historic homes dating back several centuries. Many of these beautiful homes have been converted into B&B’s. After a busy day you’ll need a place to lay your head and think about everything you saw and experienced.

DAY 2

WATCH HISTORY COME ALIVE After you’ve finished taking in the impressive architecture and history of your B&B (and after a gourmet breakfast) it’s time to head out. First on the list for today’s culture tour is a stop at the grounds of Canada’s bloodiest battle. Be transported back in time at Old Fort Erie. Experience the sights and sounds of the war of 1812 as you explore the authentic buildings and watch soldiers charge by.

BASK IN THE SIGHTS, SOUNDS AND TASTES OF HISTORY

Your trip back in time isn’t over yet. Next up is Fort George, a military outpost that defended Canada against American attacks during the war of 1812. Watch as the soldiers in red coats fire muskets and black smoke fills the air. Cover your ears as the cannon fires and when too much excitement tires you out, have a taste of the 19th century and try what food was like from a different era, and cooked over an open flame. If you’ve still got time try swinging by the Niagara Falls Museum or the Lundy’s Lane battlefield for more history and adventure.

A MEAL YOU’LL REMEMBER

Niagara is brimming with world-class restaurants and your visit won’t be complete without one. Dine on extraordinary meals at restaurants like OLiV or the Tide and Vine Oyster House. There’s something for everyone to savour (and boast about on Instagram) with a price range to match.

THE ART OF PERFORMANCE

The arts and entertainment scene in Niagara is alive and well. Why not cap off your visit in the audience of the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre? Home to everything from Broadway blockbusters to independent, thoughtful projects. Or visit the world famous Shaw Festival, North America’s second largest repertory theatre company and one of Canada’s leading cultural institutions. You’re sure to find something that will leave you thinking or laughing all the way home. Whether with the family or a solo adventure, you’re sure to fill your culture quota with a trip to Niagara.
